In the wake of our esteemed chancellor's spending review today I received an email from SDG stating:
We are delighted to inform you that the Department for Transport will be allocating £50 million to the Bikeability programme over the next four years from 2016/17 to 2019/20.
We will provide further details over the next few days.
Checking the spreadsheets published on bikeability.org.uk, the total grants to LHAs and SGOHSs are £20,429,372. Meaning that to maintain funding at current levels would require nearly £82m over a 4 year period. So this looks like a near 40% cut to me. Or am I missing something? Is the £50m from DfT supplemented by cash from Health, Education and Environment Departments? Let's hope so otherwise this is not looking at all pretty. Especially after every single TABS conference I have attended has included assurances of all the right noises coming from government about funding being maintained.
Just in case anyone is reading this I've spoken to someone "in the know". That £20m figure was inflated by a couple of factors for the specific financial year and the £50m over 4 years IS effectively a continuation of current funding levels.
So apologies for scaremongering unnecessarily!
