Spending review and funding after 2015-16

  • In the wake of our esteemed chancellor's spending review today I received an email from SDG stating:

We are delighted to inform you that the Department for Transport will be allocating £50 million to the Bikeability programme over the next four years from 2016/17 to 2019/20.
We will provide further details over the next few days.

Checking the spreadsheets published on bikeability.org.uk, the total grants to LHAs and SGOHSs are £20,429,372. Meaning that to maintain funding at current levels would require nearly £82m over a 4 year period. So this looks like a near 40% cut to me. Or am I missing something? Is the £50m from DfT supplemented by cash from Health, Education and Environment Departments? Let's hope so otherwise this is not looking at all pretty. Especially after every single TABS conference I have attended has included assurances of all the right noises coming from government about funding being maintained.

  • Just in case anyone is reading this I've spoken to someone "in the know". That £20m figure was inflated by a couple of factors for the specific financial year and the £50m over 4 years IS effectively a continuation of current funding levels.

    So apologies for scaremongering unnecessarily!
