  TABS acts as an industry representative for Bikeability schemes and is a member organisation governed by a board of directors who meet quarterly to ensure the delivery of high-quality cycle training that is consistent with the National Standard. We would like to ensure that these quarterly meetings address any issues from Bikeability schemes and are therefore asking you to post your questions for the TABS board here. These questions can then be discussed at quarterly meetings and answers posted on the forum and/or circulated as appropriate.

  There are a number of recognised Instructor Training Oraganisations (ITOs) across the country which are responsible for delivering National Standard Instructor Training and CPD opportunities. This group of organisations meets quarterly to help enhance and maintain the quality of National Standard Instructor Training in England. We would like to ensure that these quarterly meetings address any issues from Bikeability schemes and/or instructors and are therefore asking you to post your questions for the ITO group here. These questions can then be discussed at quarterly meetings and answers posted on the forum and/or circulated as appropriate.

• Sports cycling and Bikeability

  You might say that I am biased but I think the links are very positive. When talking about links between the sport and Bikeability we're not talking about Chris Hoy training young children how to ride bikes on the road. There is a lot of cross-over in Level 1 coaching and Level 1 Bikeability e.g. M check, getting on and off the bike, pedaling etc. From Level 2 onwards the courses are different but some of the principles of teaching/coaching are the same. Some of our instructors come from a coaching background and add a lot of value to our scheme. Moving on from the actual course, developing links between clubs and Bikeability ensures that children are exposed to as many cycling opportunities as possible - more cycling, more often. It works both ways, some clubs ensure their children complete Bikeability on joining the club - more children riding more confidently on the roads. Finally, I don't think we should discriminate if people chose to wear lycra - OK it's not the message we're trying to get across but in their environment it works!!

• Are outcomes best delivered independently or joined up – a couple of outcomes at one time?

  I agree it does depend on ability, but it is an integral part of our course to allow trainees to join up outcomes at some point, especially in the final session. We allow trainees time towards the end of Level 2 to join up all of the outcomes they have leraned i.e. left minor to major, U-turn, right major to minor and so on. I think this is so imporatnt because it's all about making the course as realistic as possible, as Birdonabike states above. It's also about allowing trainees the time to practice what they have learned!
